this is paul ryan over here, eastern iowa. joe biden. governor romney, the president, if you put them all on, it starts to look like that, you come back out to the map. what you see here is, much of the country, if you live on the west coast, you live up here in the prairie, you live in texas or across the deep south, you're not getting a campaign. they're not coming to see your state unless they're trying to raise money. or unless you happen to be in a tv market that bumps into one of these other states. this is florida, you see a lot of visits. you break it down by candidate, where is the president, this is the i-4 corridor. this is an area i know ari fleischer is interested in. the democrats will win the southernmost counties, will the jewish votes be less. will the president get less because of the dustup with governor romney and israel in the campaign. you won't see the president out here. this is the most conservative republican part of the state. you see them both competing here in the i-4 corridor, where you find independents. vi

this is the odd thing, everybody said paul ryan's a numbers guy. well, no, he's not, because first off, if he was shocked that the president, a democrat, did well in urban areas, he hasn't been following politics for the last hundred years. but he also, i looked up a couple of interesting counties that i like to look at. dubuque, iowa, they filmed the movie "field of dreams" there. barack obama won. he won henrico county, a very classic suburban county in virginia which is the home of eric cantor, the republican house majority leader, and in wisconsin, get this, barack obama overwhelmingly won rock county, wisconsin, which -- whose biggest town in janesville which is paul ryan's hometown and home county. i have been there, i have walked the gritty streets of janesville. it's not actually all that urban. and how can he be this dumb is the only question i've got. >> alex, congressman ryan's comments miss the point on why he and mitt romney lost? >> no. it's ridiculous. this is one of the keys you look at and we were all looking at election night, was

my big question is what role does paul ryan play in all of this. he is a national figure and said no new taxes and john boehner is going to have to try and lead compromises in his caucus. >> do you see the prom prcompro possible? >> here is the thing. in the olden days i used to say, you know what they are going to end up doing the wrong thing. i know longer think that. i believe they could retreat into their corners. it is into their self interest to get things done. as you looked at the landscape, do you see any likelihood that members will be able to come together and work on climate change and tax reform? >> i do. i'm opt miss triimistic that we go over the fiscal cliff that you better not let us do this that you are going to throw us into a recession next year. they are not crazy. they will act out of some sense of the national interest here. you have to be careful not to isolate the question of tax hikes on the wealthy. you need to put that question into a broader framework. how do we raise revenues. and how do we get spending down through en

my big question, what role does paul ryan play in all of this. he's pretty far out there a national figure, said no new taxes and john boehner will have to try and lead some compromises in his own caucus with a new national leader. >> do you see compromise as possible? because of the fiscal cliff. >> here is the thing. in the olden days when i covered the congress, i used to say, they will end up doing the right thick. i no longer think that. i now believe they could all retreat into their corners, only thing that gives me hope it's in their own self-interest to get this done. >> it's in everyone's self interest. david, as you survey the landscape of the incoming congress, any likelihood that members will be able to come together, work with the president on immigration reform, climate change, tax reform, entitlement reform? >> i do, anderson. i'm increasingly optimistic we won't go over the fiscal cliff. the sharp drop in the markets today send a clear signal to congress and the president that you guys better not let us do this. that you will thr

paul ryan is in vienna, ohio later tonight. governor romney is in cleveland tomorrow. president obama appearing tomorrow in ohio. deputy campaign manager stephanie cutter joins us now. your team keeps saying the governor is in pennsylvania now out of desperation but if he's got no shot there, why has your campaign been sending president clinton to pennsylvania in the home stretch? if the state is not in play, couldn't that time be put to better use somewhere else? >> well, president clinton has traveled through every single battleground state for us. we are enormously thankful. but we're not taking anything for granted. you know, pennsylvania has tightened, absolutely. if i were working on the romney campaign i would probably be giving it a shot, too. >> you don't think it's speration for the romney campaign to go there? >> well, i think that -- well, you know, i did notice that their super pac admitted yesterday that the reason that they went in there is because they didn't have anywhere else to spend money. so they don't have a route to 270 through ohio. they're behi

i don't see politics in his future. >> what about paul ryan? he's long been considered one of the rising stars of the republican congress. will he just pick up where he left off? or do you see him try to broaden out, claim the mantle of the party standard bearer? >> he has time. listen, he has something that is very hard for a house member to get and that is nationwide recognition. he is also a bonafide brainiac when it comes to budget things. you may not agree with what he would like to do the budget but he understands the budget. there's still a place for him there. he certainly does speak for the conservative wing in the fiscal part but he's also very pragmatic. yes, i think he can -- there's been some talk maybe he should go to a think tank and hang out for a while and think those big thoughts. it's a nice spot, he clearly wanted to keep it if he wasn't going to get the vice presidency. i think -- you know, he's young. he's 41 or 42. i think he's one of the contenders when you look four years from now, if that's the route he wants to go. >>

so we need to find ways to preserve these programs, not the paul ryan budget approach which at the end of the day would have jeopardized the program, made it too expensive for many seniors. we can find this. i do think there's a reasonable way for us to reduce the spending there without compromising the integrity of the program. >> do you favor raising the eligibility age for medicare from 65 to 67 over the next several years? >> let me tell you, i'm concerned about that. what is a person going to do who retires at age 63 or 64, and they don't have the benefit of medicaid or medicare coming away at age 65? they're on their own. if it means that they have to go out and try to find health insurance when they have a bad health record, it becomes impossible or way too expensive. i want to make sure there are no gaps in coverage for those who have retired, waiting for medicare to kick in. >> how confident are you, senator, we are going to see a deal before the december 31st deadline? >> i know we can do it. i absolutely know it. what we need to have is a commitment from speaker boehner that
